About Mindful Art & Workshops
Mindfulness & Art
MindfulnessMindfulness is the practice of paying attention – to thoughts, physical sensations and the environment without feeling the need to constantly judge what’s happening or to make it other than it is. Mindfulness can be cultivated through a formal practice like meditation or art and we can bring Mindful attention to our daily activities. The benefits of this include:
- Increased empathy and compassion
- Improved immune functioning
- Increased happiness and optimism
- Improved sleep
- Greater focus and concentration
- Reduced stress and anxiety
Mindful ArtArt and creative practices can be naturally and instinctively mindful. Drawing, painting, and other artistic media have the power to draw us into the present moment, to bring our focus to the relationship between the pen/brush and the surface, to search for ways to convey visually what’s in our minds. Creating a work of visual art requires us to turn inward, contemplate, reflect, and plan before expressing that work in the external world. Art Mindfulness is not necessarily about the absence of thought, nor is it about brushing aside negative emotions, thoughts, or sensations. Instead, it is about drawing awareness to what’s going on internally and acting intentionally and thoughtfully in response to those stimuli. Cultivating mindfulness practices in a group can positively impact clients in a number of ways. Mindfulness can help them react more constructively to stress. It can help improve social interactions between themselves and others. It can help them practice compassion for themselves and others, deal with “failures,” and develop a growth mindset. When we begin to bring awareness to our everyday activities, we can practice connecting with what’s going on internally and make slow, subtle shifts in how we react to our own internal stimuli. Visual art is such a natural place to practice this- in work that is creative, expressive, individual, and allows for reflection. I am very knowledgeable with what I am teaching through self–development, personal experience and having done Art for such a long time. I am passionate about the way that Art and Mindfulness can change a persons way of living for the better, through such small practices, big change can happen.

I have always been into Art. As a kid I would draw, write stories and even act….a lot 😉 I found that having these outlets calmed my mind and soothed the soul.
This was truly evident in my early twenties when I started to have major anxiety attacks and depression on a scale that had me hospitalised and then housebound, so agoraphobic that I didn’t walk out my front door for nearly three months and unable to do any of the things that I usually loved to do. I was at complete rock bottom and didn’t think I would ever find something to help me cope ever again until one day, I made the choice to pick up a pencil and start doodling. I think the activity and something to focus on really changed something in me that nothing else could. I would do it whenever I felt uneasy or in a situation that made me uncomfortable so that my mind had something to focus on.
I have now been using Art Mindfulness in my life for over twenty years, using all sorts of mediums and techniques and want to share this with others. Together we will learn and create all sorts of different things as a community and remember, NO SKILLS or ARTISTIC TALENTS REQUIRED!!!! There is no judgement in our workshops, just the love of Art, Mindfulness and definitely some laughter!
